Otoplasty, also called ear surgery, is performed to help improve the appearance of ears that are overly large or stick out from the side of the head. Kids with overly pronounced ears are often the target of years of senseless teasing by their peers which can negatively affect their self-confidence through into adulthood. Otoplasty is performed through an incision hidden in the natural crease of the ear and the cartilage is then removed and/or reshaped to create the desired results. Kids as young as 5 are generally eligible for the otoplasty procedure and it is often recommended that the earlier the procedure is performed, the better, as the cartilage is more malleable in children.
