Using Fat Grafting for Breast Surgery

I had the great opportunity to attend the American Society of Plastic Surgeons annual conference in Toronto in October. Many studies were presented on the safety of fat grafting to the breast for reconstructive and aesthetic surgery. Treatments include revisions after cancer, treatment of congenital deformities or size differences and augmentation (one half cup size). Reconstruction is especially exciting as it gives a good option for those who have had lumpectomy and radiation that need symmetry.

Previous concerns had been over the appearance of fat on radiologic examination. Studies showed that radiologists have been able to defferentiate. Risks include absorption of the fat, and some increased propensity for biopsy.

I have been performing the fat grafting procedure for over six years for facial and body work. The latest studies on breast fat grafting will enable Iowa Plastic Surgery to continue with the latest techniques and developments.
